Dog Warden
Thanks for visiting the Hardin County Dog Warden page. The mission of the Hardin County Dog warden’s office is to enforce the Ohio Revised Code dog laws. Hardin County Dog Warden facility is an agency working under the authority and direction of the Hardin County Board of Commissioners and charged with enforcement of the dog control laws governed by the Ohio Revised Code. Our agency will house stray dogs in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code. Strays are kept at the facility for at least 3 days prior before deposition. The state of Ohio law ORC 955.01- Registration of dogs states every person who owns, keeps or harbors a dog more than 3 months of age or older shall have a tag.
The state of Ohio law ORC 955.10 states that your dog must wear at all times, a valid tag that was issued in connection with a certificate of registration.
Hardin County dog license fees are $20 per dog over the age of 3 months. Dog tags can be purchased for the upcoming year between Dec 1st – Jan 31st. If residents own a dog and fail to purchase the dog license during these dates, then they will be charged a $20 late fee on top of the registration fee. The State of Ohio law ORC 955.22(C) Dog at large states that the owner or keeper of every dog shall at all times keep such dog either confined upon the premises of the owner/keeper or under reasonable control of some person, except when lawfully engaged in hunting accompanied by an owner or handler.
The State of Ohio ORC 955.11 – Proper confinement law states that Dog Wardens are responsible for enforcing the compliance requirements for dogs that have been designated dangerous or Vicious.
Dangerous Dog means a dog that, without provocation has done any of the following:
- Caused injury, other than killing or serious injury, to any person
- Killed another dog
- Been a subject of a third or subsequent conviction of ORC 955.22(C)
A vicious dog means a dog that, without provocation has killed or caused serious injury to any person.
Our agency employs The Dog Warden (Cody Blair) and Deputy Dog Warden (Open) who respond to calls for service. Vehicles operated by the Dog Wardens are black trucks with the Hardin County Dog Warden insignia on both sides of the vehicle. While on duty dog wardens will wear a shirt with the Hardin County Dog Warden insignia on the front. Our agency also employs a kennel worker, who assists with the cleanliness of the facility and care of the dogs. After hours if an emergency you can contact the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and they will dispatch an Officer or Dog Warden accordingly.
