Conservation Farm Family Award
The Conservation Farm Family Award was created in 1984 by the Ohio Farmer magazine as a way to honor farmers/families for their impact on community members and their commendable efforts of conserving soil, water, wildlife, woodlands and other natural resources. Each year, this honor is awarded to five recipients in Ohio at the Farm Science Review to represent the five areas that Ohio is divided into. Jerry and Jayna McBride & Family are the 2025 Area One winners!
2026 Pond Fish Sale
A successful Pond Fish Sale for 2026! Remlinger Fish Farm provided a wide range of species for our sale this year. Species available were bluegill, hybrid bluegill, redear shellcracker, black crappie, channel catfish, jumbo yellow perch, largemouth bass, white amur, black fathead minnows, and koi. There was a total of 21,258 fish sold including 19,500 minnows. It was a smooth pickup as the fish were prepackaged in boxes with oxygen and labeled for each order!
Tree Sale
Trees are very important for the environment in that they store carbon, release oxygen, and aid in providing a healthy stable ecosystem. Varieties available were red oak, dawn redwood, swamp white oak, river birch, arborvitae, white pine, blue spruce, and norway spruce. The total number of trees sold in 2026 were 1,660 with 53 orders!
OSU Extension Family Engagement Day
On April 19th, we were happy to have a booth at the OSU Extension Family Engagement Event! We had lots of fun with all ages from kids to adults making wildflower blooms. Spring is the perfect time to plant them and watch them grow just in time for Mother’s Day.
Area One Envirothon
Ohio is split into 5 different areas, and Hardin County is located in Area One. Hardin SWCD sponsored a team from Upper Scioto Valley to compete in this year’s Envirothon! There was a total of 31 teams competing in areas of forestry, aquatics, wildlife, soils, and current environmental issues. The Envirothon was held in Williams County this year and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for the students to gain hands-on experience!
Forestry Field Day
Forestry Field Day turned out to be a beautiful autumn afternoon! It was a great opportunity to hear from our forester, Steve McGinnis, while riding the horse drawn wagon, enjoying the fall food menu, and the kid’s activities!
2025 Annual Meeting/Appreciation Day
It was great to spend time with our conservation friends at the 2025 Annual Meeting/Appreciation Day! Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy a good meal and listen to conservation updates. We value the feedback and look forward to seeing you all again next year! We are proud to congratulate Wilcox Farms on receiving the 2025 Cooperator of the Year Award! They are commended for their stewardship as they implement many best management practices on their land/farming operation. Tom Wilcox Sr. also served on the Hardin SWCD Board of Supervisors from 1964-1967.
2025 Hardin County Fair/Conservation Contest
Another year at the Hardin County Fair! Thanks to everyone who stopped out to see us at our fair booth to guess the mystery farm photos, place bids on baskets, and ask us questions. A new addition to our booth this year was the basket bidding. Businesses in Hardin County donated baskets/items and half a hog to Hardin SWCD. These items were put through silent auction, and all proceeds will go towards creating a scholarship fund to support Hardin County youth! We were impressed with the participants in the Conservation Contest! It was clear that they were well prepared and put a lot of work into their projects. Congratulations to all participants!
